For a “forever GM” like myself it feels kind of awkward to be part of a group as a player in a D&D campaign. I also actually started the campaign as GM and then I switched place with one of the player who volunteered for the role of GM. He devoted a lot of time in the lore of the campaign, developing several side-quests and adding a lot of NPC. The group had already two warriors, a wizard, a druid and a thief therefore i decided to play the cleric.
After a few investigation in town we discovered that the thieves’ guild was planning to infiltrate one of their leaders among the caravan company. The church of St. Ygg was aware of their plan and sent me to protect the cleric Eustachio who was coming to town in order to deal with the thieves. He was the man for the job because St. Ygg granted him the ability to read the hearts of people. Also he needed protection because, despite being a high level cleric, he refuses to wield any weapon.
When I reached his the chart, driven by a paladin, he agreed to meet me but sent me away as he needed no protection. I thought I smelled something rotten inside the chart but I didn’t realize that Eustachio was actually an undead. It was only when his bodyguard killed Alaster in the middle of the street that I and my companion became questioning him. He refused to answer and also charged Zeddicus the wizard with treason. I refused to let him be arrested or worse by the paladin and so the combat begun.
The undead creature proved to be a great enemy and used several priestly spells against us. He also used sanctuary and darkness upon himself and we were barely able to land some hits on him until both of them finally expired. This happened too late: the creature managed to cast invoke lightning and used it against our druid Allanon that died.
Finally I managed to free the paladin from the suggestion by casting protection from evil upon him. When he realized what ha had done however, he committed suicide with his sword. A vial of holy water finally allowed me to get rid of the monster.
After a few seconds he rose up again, this time with the shape of one of the three thieves killed by the patriarch of St. Ygg many years ago. Also this form was dispatched after a few rounds of combat.
Then something even worse appeared as a black fragment of the tablet of chaos emerged from the body and took the shape of a great shadow dragon. The wizard had almost no spell and I had only silence at that point. Luckily for us Dekheon arrived and he and Valeron proved to be of great help in the combat that followed.
Despite being only a 4th level cleric I decided to provoke the dragon and managed to benefit from my good AC, improved by protection from evil that was still active. I somehow sustained one dragon breath attack and several rounds of multi-attacks from the dragon. Finally the beast was slain by the roc evoked by Valeron, now a PC.
After the combat Valeron lost control of the giant bird that went down feasting on the corpse of the dragon, scattering a horde of people, sent by the thieves guild to take us. We managed to escape and take refuge into the tower of Mazzahs the magnificent.
